Solar energy system for Samuel, Son & Co. reduces operational costs and advances sustainability goals.

In 2022, Onyx, in partnership with SOLON Corporation, completed a 1.1-megawatt (MW) onsite solar energy system for Samuel, Son & Co., a leading North American steel manufacturer, to advance the company’s sustainability goals and reduce operational costs.

Six solar carport canopies were installed in the parking lot of Samuel, Son & Co.’s advanced industrial fabrication facility in Tucson, Arizona. The carport array now generates a significant portion of the facility’s energy, helping reduce dependence on the grid and support the company’s five-year clean energy targets by making use of previously underutilized space

This initiative is an example of how industrial companies can leverage onsite solar to achieve substantial cost savings while also demonstrating leadership in sustainable practices.

“Achieving our sustainability goals means capitalizing on underutilized space for renewable energy to support our operations. Onyx and SOLON were able to bring us reliable, affordable clean energy solutions that aligned with our goals, allowing our business to reduce both our greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs simultaneously.”
— Kevin Garrison, Project Manager, Samuel, Son & Co.

Onyx Renewables partnered with Samuel, Son & Co. under an operating lease arrangement and worked with SOLON, a full-service commercial and utility-scale clean energy contractor, to develop the project. This agreement allowed Samuel, Son & Co. to purchase power from the solar installation over a 25-year term, providing both stability in energy costs and long-term operational savings

Under this arrangement, Onyx also manages the maintenance and performance of these assets, ensuring that each canopy performs at peak efficiency over its lifetime. By overseeing the system’s performance, Onyx helps Samuel, Son & Co. maintain predictable energy costs, which are essential for budgeting and operational planning in the industrial sector.

First multi-family community in New York state to be awarded LEED Platinum certification

As a direct result of Onyx’s efforts, StuyTown and Peter Cooper Village became the first multi-family communities in New York state to be awarded LEED Platinum certification, the highest level of green building certification.

The StuyTown and Peter Cooper Village project also benefits New York City as a whole. All energy generated by the StuyTown panels is collected and distributed in the power grid by the local utility, Consolidated Edison (Con Edison). This extra solar energy will help reduce outages by taking pressure off the grid when demand for electricity is peaking on hot summer days.
