Manufacturing Technology Leader Locks in Stable Energy Pricing With Distributed Solar Power

Bystronic, a leading provider of metal and material processing solutions for manufacturers, stabilized energy costs at its U.S. headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Illinois with the completion of a 1.58-megawatt rooftop solar array in November 2025. The industrial solar solution is projected to achieve energy cost savings within the first year of operation and enable long-term cost savings in an area where industrial electricity rates have fluctuated in recent years, ultimately rising more than 20% between 2020 and 2024.

Driven by an ambitious sustainability strategy, Bystronic sought a partner for distributed solar development at its Illinois location. Through a renewable energy procurement process, the company chose to partner with Verde Solutions, which originated the project and served as developer and engineering, procurement, and construction partner. Onyx Renewables provided financing for the solar array and performed additional quality assurance on the project to ensure it met the company’s GEM standards. Onyx will now serve as the long-term owner-operator, enabling Bystronic’s energy savings and operational resilience for the next 25 years. Ongoing performance monitoring and proactive maintenance, carried out by skilled solar professionals, will ensure Onyx lives up to its track record of delivering seamless, top-tier power, allowing Bystronic to focus on its core business objectives.

The Illinois project marks a sustainability milestone for the company, with one-third of its operations worldwide now featuring onsite renewable energy. Its rooftop array, the largest solar installation within 50 miles, is expected to generate more than 55.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean, reliable energy over the next three decades, avoiding nearly 40,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions — the equivalent of taking 8,475 gas-powered cars off the road for one year.

“Knowing Onyx will be watching over this system for decades lets us stop thinking about our energy costs and get back to building things.”
